FAQ’s

Is this an audition?

-No, this is strictly an instructional clinic for intermediate to advanced players. The instructors will be giving techniques to help pass auditions so attending the clinic can be very beneficial. Also, there is a $25 discount to the February audition for attending the clinic.

Who can attend?

Any middle school, high school or college music student. Must be 11 or older. Attendees must have basic knowledge of instrument they will play at the clinic.
*Ability to sight read music is required*

Are there any perks for groups?

If you can put together a group of 10-19 students each of you will get a free Guardians lanyard

If you can put together a group of 20 or more students each of you will get a free Guardians work T-shirt

Why attend?

1. This clinic is designed for those students looking to improve their skills on a particular instrument that is used in Drum Corps. This is not for beginners looking to learn a new instrument for the first time. If you are a woodwind player looking to get into drum corps and have a basic knowledge of another instrument or apparatus you can use this clinic to improve your skills on the new instrument

2. This clinic will help those looking to attend the February audition camp. We will help give you the skills to have a much better chance to pass that audition and march with Guardians this summer

What to bring?

Percussion Battery-sticks, drum pad and stand are required. Drum and stand (if you have one to bring) are recommended. Sticks and drum pads will be available for sale at clinic if you don’t have one.

Percussion Front Ensemble-4 mallets are required

Brass-a mouthpiece is required. A horn is requested if you have one to bring. Horns will be provided on a limited basis. Gloves are recommended

Color Guard-a flag and rifle are requested. We will have a limited number of apparatuses.

Drum Major-Gloves

We recommend everyone bring a water jug.

Will there be Orientation for new individuals to the world of DCI?

There will be an orientation/Q&A at 9am with the corps director Bill Greenberg. Bill will talk about what it is to be in drum corps and what Guardians will be doing for spring and summer.

Brass Fundamentals

  • Tone production – how to create a rich, resonant sound with good air support
  • Breathing techniques – efficient airflow for endurance and volume
  • Embouchure formation & flexibility – strength and control across registers
  • Articulation & clarity – precision in attacks and releases
  • Intonation & blend – how to tune with an ensemble, not just a tuner

  • Listening & balance – matching tone, pitch, and volume across the section

Clinic Instructors

Bill Bachman is a world-renowned specialist in hand technique with a heavy background in rudimental drumming and its application to the drumset.

He is the founder of the hand technique site drumworkout.com which made Modern Drummer magazine’s Top 6 online resources list, author of the books Stick Technique and Rhythm & Chops Builders, and the “Logic” book series for RowLoff.com which has become part of the curriculum in many schools and universities. Bill designed Vic Firth’s Heavy Hitter pad series and his signature drumsticks and has twice been nominated in Modern Drummer magazine’s annual readers poll, as an educator and for his book Rhythm & Chops Builders.

He earned a B.M. from Berklee College of Music, studied at the University of North Texas and has played with and taught many award-winning marching percussion groups, including the UNT drumline and the Cadets, Bluecoats, Blue Knights and Carolina Crown drum & bugle corps.

Behind the drumset Bill is the drummer for Herd of Instinct, Spoke of Shadows, has toured with progressive rock artist Neal Morse, is on recordings with Trey Gunn (King Crimson), Colin Edwin (Porcupine Tree), Adam Holzman (Miles Davis & Steven Wilson), Gerald Albright (Grammy award winning saxophonist), and gigs locally on a regular basis. He’s performed at clinics and drum festivals on five continents and teaches at Marcus and Flower Mound High Schools along with offering online lessons globally.

Garrett Tucker joins GISD as the new Director of Percussion Studies. Prior to his appointment with GISD, Mr. Tucker has taught at Terrell ISD and was also the percussion paraprofessional for the Centennial High School cluster in Frisco, TX. Mr. Tucker has also taught at Richardson ISD, Crandall ISD, and Wylie ISD.

As a performer Mr. Tucker competed in the Drum Corps International World Championships with the Troopers Drum and Bugle Corps in 2014. He is also associated with the Sherman Symphony, DAAYO, and has performed as an artist for the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC).

Mr. Tucker received his Bachelor’s in Music Education from the University of North Texas where he was able to perform with the UNT Symphony Orchestra, Two O’ Clock Steel Band, UNT Percussion Ensemble, Gamelan Ensemble, Afro-Cuban Ensemble, and served as principal percussionist for the UNT Wind Ensemble.

Mr. Tucker enjoys binge watching TV shows, eating Tex-Mex, and playing music in his spare time.

Michael Swann is a freelance trombonist and music educator in Dallas, TX. He teaches lessons and masterclasses for all low brass instruments in several districts across the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex and regularly performs with regional orchestras, chamber ensembles, jazz bands, and commercial groups. Michael also serves as an adjudicator and clinician throughout the state.

Growing up in North Texas, Michael was immersed in a vibrant musical community. He performed with the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra from 2006–2008, including an international concert tour with the GDYO Wind Symphony. In 2008, Michael was selected as the Bass Trombonist of the Young Artist Orchestra at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute.

Michael holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Stephen F. Austin State University, where he studied with Dr. Deb Scott and performed extensively with the SFA Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, and Trombone Choir. His other primary teachers include Bob Burnham, Jimmy Clark, and Dr. Bruce Faske.

Michael is excited to lead the Guardians horn line, sharing his passion and expertise as their Brass Caption Head & Brass Arranger.

Marcordric Collins is a seasoned dancer, choreographer, and colorguard director with more than a decade of experience shaping performing arts programs across Texas. Beginning his dance journey in 2010, he has built a distinguished career as an educator, technician, and creative leader known for his dynamic artistry and commitment to excellence.

Marcordric is the founder and former director of Black Pointe Dance Company (2015–2020), where he conceptualized, designed, and choreographed a wide range of original productions including Alice in Wonderland (2015), Sleepy Hollow (2015), and Winter’s Eve Collage (2018). His choreography and technical expertise have been sought after by numerous schools, theater companies, and performance ensembles, with credits spanning Winona High School, TJC Dance Fest, Lone Star theater productions, ASU Angelettes, and multiple colorguard programs across the state.

A respected leader in the marching arts lol community, Marcordric currently serves as Color Guard Caption Head for Guardians Drum & Bugle Corps (2024–Present) and as Director of Colorguard for Mabank ISD. His performance background includes membership in World Class Drum Corps, Touch of Gold Color Guard, and Bay Pointe Dance Company.

Students attending the clinic should expect to feel encouraged and challenged under their time with Collins. With training and experience across ballet, jazz, modern/contemporary, musical theatre, heels, hip hop, cheer, and colorguard instruction, he brings versatility and creativity.

Jesse Aguilar is an associate band director at Frankford Middle School. His philosophy, as a music educator, is to guide the growth and creativity of students in order to enable their success. Their use of consistent collaboration and critical thinking skills will mold them into outstanding individuals.

Jesse has been an admin and instructor with DCI World Class finalist Troopers Drum and Bugle Corps and DCI Open Class finalists Guardians Drum and Bugle Corps. He has also taught and instructed at multple North Texas high schools teaching visual, brass and conducting.

He has marched and performed with DCI World Class finalists Troopers and Blue Knights Drum and Bugle Corps, DCI Open Class Finalists Guardians, Texas A&M Commerce “Pride” Marching Band, Texas A&M Commerce Horn Studio Chamber Ensemble and Texas A&M Commerce Tube/Euphonium Studio Chamber Ensemble

Jesse has a Bachelors of Music Education from Texas A&M University-Commerce. He is currently a member of International Tube Euphonium Association, National Association of Music Educators, Texas Music Education Association and Texas Bandmasters Association
