Visual-All auditionees will perform a Left Box Drill in the marching style they are most comfortable with (bent leg, straight leg, etc.). The purpose of this exercise is to evaluate timing control, directional clarity, upper and lower body separation, posture and horn carriage, consistency of step size, and spatial awareness. Auditionees may choose the technique they are strongest in; however, technique must remain consistent throughout the entire exercise. The drill should be performed with a metronome at 144 bpm.
The Left Box Drill will be performed as follows:
- Begin at a set position, facing front, with your instrument in the playing position (horns up).
- Forward march for 8 counts.
- Forward slide to the left for 8 counts
- Backwards march for 8 counts
- Backwards slide to the right for 8 counts
- Finish the exercise at your original starting point
